Choriki sentai Ohranger review

                                             My first review

Welcome to BroMario reviews ! When I'm taking a break from not having a life I've decided

to share opinions on shows and movies that strike my interest. there's not particular theme to

any of this other than franchises I just happen to like. Nothing else to say other than enjoy

the review and let me know what you think.

                                           Introduction

For those of you who don't know Super sentai is a long running Japanese live action

superhero show that started in 1975 around runs until current day. What's it about? Stop me

if you heard this one; a group three or five people dress up in colorful spandex outfits ,

fight rubber suit monsters and then summon a giant robot to cap off the episdode. If that

sounds familiar it's probably because it sounds exactly like Power rangers , which is adapted

from Super sentai (mainly the action sequences , props , suits , and certain plot details).

Today's focus is on the 19th entry of Super sentai , Choriki sentai Ohranger. A series that's

infamous for having to be retooled due to the series initially being to controversial  in light of

at time recent terror attacks in Japan. So did the series hold up despite these changes ?

                                                The Story

Six million years ago a colony of robots known as Baranoia were created by an ancient

civilization on Pangea  and  as most robots in fiction do rebelled against their creators and

started all out war. Using the mysterious power of  Choriki energy Baranoia was defeated and

exiled. Fast forward to 1995 were everything is all nice and peaceful until Baranoia returns

and decides to conquer Earth. In response U.A.O.H.(United Airforce Overtech Hardware)

assembles it's five best officers to use the now rediscovered choriki energy to combat Baranoia

as Choriki sentai Ohranger.

                                               The Plot

Initially Ohranger was  very interesting and came off a series that was serious without being

convoluted or full of itself. The threat of Baranoia was very real and almost terrorist like in it's

presentation. The Choriki energy was humanities only weapon and it often took a toll on the main

characters who would be exhausted after each use. Unfortunately none of this would last as the

above mentioned retool happened and got read of the majority of these elements , resulting in

an overall bland show. See the beauty of a long series with a revolving door of characters , writers ,

themes and so on is the unique perspective each one brings. After Ohranger got retooled it lost just

about all of the uniqueness it had and just became a very by the numbers series that just went

through the motions without adding anything of it's own to the mix. New villains appear without

much backstory , new weapons are gained out of thin air , problems very rarely have lasting

consequences , and the shows attempt at comedy fall flat (though robot physical therapy was fun).

On some occasions the show would display some of it's original seriousness and inject some suspense

into the story , particularly during the final arc , but it ultimately didn't save the show in my eyes.

                                             Characters

Going to keep this short and sweet since I basically feel the same way about all the

characters; they're boring. Like they have maybe one or two character trait each and don't

change or develop at all in the story. We learn a few things about them along the way but it

rarely if ever impacts the story or sheds light on the character. Special mention goes to

Goro Hoshino/OhRed who is the most forgettable red ranger in existence. Baranoia is almost

just as bland but is saved by having something of an arc regarding emotion. At the start of the

series Bacashund (the leader of Baranoia) hates emotion and considers it a weakness , as do

the rest of the royal family , but over time we see this isn't entirely the case as they are shown to

posses strong feeling towards each other.

                                             Technical

The designs and action for the show were absolutely amazing , blending technological and

ancient civilization aesthetics very well. The music was also nice and memorable (special

mention going towards the insert song Niji iro crystal sky).

                                                Zeo

Ohranger's American adaption power rangers Zeo had a far more focused plot and gave

better focus to it's characters. It also made sure each weapon and power up gained had a

proper explination. So in my opinion it was a better series.

                                           Conclusion

Overall Choriki sentai Ohranger was a series that was unfortunately brought down by the

dramas of real world problems and didn't recover , landing it a okay at best , mediocre at worst

     spot.
